Bloomsburg University Rolls Past East Stroudsburg 42-23

Box Score

BLOOMSBURG-- Derrick Price (Burlington, NJ/Burlington City) rushed for 113 yards and a score and the Bloomsburg University (7-0, 4-0 PSAC East) defense converted two turnovers into touchdowns to lead the Huskies to a 42-23 win over East Stroudsburg (5-2, 2-2 PSAC East) on Saturday. The win was the 12th straight for the Huskies dating back to last year.

Bloomsburg's defense made the first big play in the game when Vince Browning (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) intercepted a Tim Roken pass on the game's opening drive and returned it 58-yards for a touchdown just 1:34 into the game. The Huskies added to their lead on their first drive of the game marching 98-yards in 16 plays with Stefan Adams (West Chester/Henderson) covering the last three yards to give Bloomsburg a 14-0 after one period.

The defense made its second big play of the game late in the first period when Jesse Cooper (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp) recovered a fumble by Joe Patridge and returned it 20 yards to the Warriors 41-yard line. Eight plays later Adams scored his second touchdown of the game to make it 21-0 in favor of the Huskies.

After the Bloomsburg defense forced a three and out, quarterback Dan Latorre (Elysburg/Southern Columbia) connected with Kyle Ream (Eliottsburg/West Perry) on a 77-yard scoring pass for 28-0 lead with 10:04 left in the third.

East Stroudsburg finally broke through with a 51-yard scoring drive with Patridge going from two-yards out to make it 28-7 with 4:04 left to play before halftime.

The Huskies put up one more score before halftime when Price, who leads the PSAC in rushing, ran 34-yards for a score to give Bloomsburg a 35-7 lead at the break.

East Stroudsburg began to chip away at the lead in the third period. Roken hit Doug Ogden with a five-yard scoring pass to cap a 67-yard drive. The big play in the drive was a 57-yard option pass by Sam Shuman to Ed Kiser for 57-yards putting the ball at the Bloomsburg 10-yard.

Early in the fourth quarter the Warriors defense sacked Latorre in the end zone for a safety bringing the Warriors to within 35-16 with 13:23 left in the game. After the Huskies free kick to the Warriors gave East Stroudsburg the ball at the ESU 46-yard line, Roken put together a three-play drive with Patridge scoring from four yards to make it a 35-23 game with 12:14 to go in the game.

After a short kickoff and a personal foul gave the Huskies the ball at midfield, Bloomsburg put together a strange scoring drive. After moving to the ESU 27-yard line, a loss, a delay of game penalty and a holding call put Bloomsburg in a third and 30 situation. Latorre then scrambled for 22-yards bringing up a fourth and eight and a field goal attempt. However, a false start penalty pushed the Huskies back five yards. Going for it on fourth and 12, Latorre hit Jordan Weisman (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) with 30-yard scoring strike to put the game out of reach at 42-23.

Price finished with 113 yards on 16 carries, while Latorre was seven of 15 for 179 yards and two touchdowns for Bloomsburg. Defensively, Greg Myers (Philadelphia/Dobbins Tech) had nine tackles.

The Huskies play at Cheyney on Saturday at 1 p.m.
